Ten Years of Dedication: Building The ONE Future Foundation

In the following interview, Tristan Bailey (Gamma, SP10), ONE Future Foundation Founder and first Secretary, and Former Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. Director of Philanthropy & Fundraising tells us about her almost-decade-long involvement in bringing the ONE Future Foundation to life.

Q1. What inspired you to create the foundation?
Tristan
: When I joined the Theta Nu Xi national board as Director of Philanthropy and Fundraising around 2017, I learned about an earlier attempt to start a foundation that had not succeeded due to lack of funds. That original board had wisely set aside money in a savings account for the next effort. I saw this as an opportunity to transform the sorority’s ability to support its members sustainably and create opportunities that could impact generations.

Q2. What motivated you to take on this challenge?
Tristan
: I was not sure I was the right person at first, I’ve never started a foundation. But I knew the work needed to be done. Membership dues were funding scholarships and programs, which was not sustainable. I believed that creating a foundation could relieve that burden and provide lasting support for our members. This was bigger than me. It was about building something transformative for the sorority.

Q3. How did you move forward and build support?
Tristan
: I researched, sought advice from experts, and consulted the original foundation board. Over the years, I built a working committee and used the savings account to cover early expenses like legal consultations. I did not do this alone. Many members on the founding board have been part of this effort for nearly ten years (some even longer), including Jennis Watson, who started the original foundation. Their dedication and guidance were invaluable.

Q4. When did it feel real that the foundation could succeed?
Tristan
: After completing two terms as DPF, Danielle, my successor, carried the effort forward. Together, we submitted legislation that officially established the foundation. Hearing the excitement from the membership confirmed that this was more than an idea. It was a vehicle to empower members, fund scholarships, and make a lasting impact. It also reinforced my belief that you don’t always have to hold the leadership role to move important work forward. I’m proud of my ability to step aside at that point and trust the process, knowing the foundation was in capable hands.

Q5. How did this experience impact you personally?
Tristan
: This leadership journey has been incredibly valuable to my personal growth. In the beginning, I was unsure because I did not know what to do. Now I serve on the first foundation board, which is an incredible accomplishment I am immensely proud of. TNX gave me the space to grow in this capacity, and the experience has spilled over into other boards and professional opportunities. I have also been inspired by the way sorors have come together to work on this. We do not always agree, but our shared commitment to the mission and vision propels us forward with respect, optimism, and collaboration.

Q6. What is your vision for the foundation’s future?
Tristan
: The first year was foundational. We built committees, governance structures, and processes. It was not glamorous, but it was necessary. Going forward, I am excited to establish our brand, award scholarships, and fund programs that empower members and communities. With the dedication of so many committed members over nearly ten years, this foundation will continue to transform lives, strengthen our sorority, and leave a legacy that will benefit generations to come. I’m proud that this foundation is now a part of my legacy.

Q7. What lessons did you learn from this journey?
Tristan
: I learned that persistence and collaboration are key. Even when facing skepticism or uncertainty, staying focused on the mission and surrounding yourself with committed, passionate people can turn a vision into reality. Leadership is not about doing everything yourself but about creating opportunities for others to contribute and grow.

Q8. What advice would you give someone trying to start a foundation or lead a long-term initiative?
Tristan
: The original foundation founders “failed” in their first attempt, but their vision and effort laid the groundwork for what we were able to achieve. This shows that it often takes many attempts to succeed, and we should not be discouraged when things do not go as planned. Perseverance, learning from experience, and building a dedicated team are essential. Every step brings you closer to transforming your vision into reality.

Q9. How do you hope members will engage with the foundation?
Tristan
: I really hope members connect with us, apply for scholarships and grants, serve on the board, and generally get involved. We are always looking for more people to serve on the board. While board experience is a plus, we want people who are passionate and hard working. I hope members feel connected to the vision and mission, and that this inspires them to raise funds and contribute. We are launching the website and social media accounts, and we want all the chapters involved in building something meaningful together.
